Residential Placements

Our residential houses are situated in a cul-de-sac arrangement called Hope Lane. The houses offer spacious accommodation designed to afford young people the opportunity for both privacy and shared living.

Each house provides accommodation for six pupils who enjoy their own room with en-suite shower facilities. Pupils are placed in one of eight houses based on a combination of age and individual need.

Visits by relatives are encouraged with prior notification to ensure there is no clash with scheduled school activities.  Pupils are also actively encouraged to keep in contact with home by telephone.  Each student house is equipped with a pay phone that is available for pupils use, with some calls available free of charge.

A close relationship exists between teaching and residential staff as well as between the school, parents and local authority.

Night supervision is an extremely important issue and as a result there is at least one waking Night Child Care Worker on duty in each of the houses, who has access to two members of senior staff at all times.

38 & 52 WEEK PROVISION

Young people can be accommodated for up to 52 weeks of the year in houses with en-suite facilities, homely communal lounge areas, study facilities and kitchen/dining areas.  The young people are encouraged to personalise their own bedrooms.  Large teams of staff ensure a high level of support and consistent care throughout the year.

Education is provided on site for 38 weeks of the year.  During school holidays, pupils participate in a whole variety of activities including mountain biking, swimming, canoeing, orienteering, golf, cinema trips, bowling and to other community venues depending on young peoples skills and interests.

The young people will also participate in at least one holiday away from the home each year which will be planned and arranged with input from the young people.

HEALTH CARE

All resident pupils are registered with the local GP who attends to their daily health needs.

Wider medical care, specialist assistance and advice are readily available through the services of the Wigan Area Health Authority.  Pupils also receive regular dental and optical attention.

RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES

A wide range of recreational activities are offered within a formal programme at the school and there is an expectation that all children will participate in such activities on at least two evenings per week.  Progress and performance is reported by staff and is collated in reports for the statutory annual reviews.

The range of activities offer opportunities for young people to participate in both active and reflective experiences.

The recreational resources and environmental surroundings of the school lend themselves to a wide variety of activities.

RESIDENTIAL HOLIDAYS

The pupils at Nugent House School have opportunities to experience residential holidays that will develop self-esteem, team building and the development of friendships. Examples range from multi-activity camps in the Lake District to visits to Disneyland Paris for the younger pupils.
